AI Used By Young Astronomers To Discover Two Exoplanets

An undergraduate student lead to a team of astronomers in Texas has discovered 2 planets revolving stars early 1,200 light-years away from our planet Earth. 4,000 exoplanets were already known by astronomers, so finding 2 more new might not appear like huge news. But how they were found out and by whom is definitely getting attention. Anne Dattilo, a student at the Texas university, Austin, discovered the planets with the help of artificial intelligence program to shift thru a mountain of info assembled by Kepler space telescope of NASA. With the help of AI, the 22 years old girl is serving to help in a new period in astronomical investigation.

Nearly one and half year ago, Dattilo was involved in the project, after a talk during one of her classes was given by Andrew Vanderburg. To search for planets revolving distant stars, Vanderburg uses info from Kepler. He said, at the very end that, he was taking undergrads if any of them wanted to do the research on the subject of finding planets, that’s when Dattilo said, she decided she wants to do that so she emailed him.

As per the reports, Kepler was launched in the 2009, which was intended to point at a minor area of sky and keep the track on the light from nearly 100,000 stars in its arena of view. The light impending from the star will get dim a little when planet passes in front of it, if there is a planet revolving one of the stars. An AI program known as AstroNet-K2 was modified by Dattilo to work on info from the latter part of the Kepler mission. Once stars which appeared to have planets were found by the modified program, ground based telescope was used by Dattilo and her colleagues to confirm the findings.
